Obviously some mechanical knowhow....you do need a degree nowadays to get a job and a diagnostic computer for the kind of car your are going to fix, but most of all some common sense which is the most difficult thing to have or learn





Many independent shops look for ASE certification. But you do not need any degree to work as a mechanic in most places. I am an ASE master technician and I can honestly say it is a completely worthless piece of paper. I know techs that don't know their heads from their ars and are certified and I know others that are not and are very good. Anyone can study the ase guide and pass.
