What do you need to be aware of or make sure you do when selling a car to someone in a foreign country?

Your first consideration should be getting paid and not being the victim of a scam or fraud.

1. Never accept a cashier's check, Western Union payment or other "paper" payment as these often turn out to be fraudulent after the buyer has possession of your vehicle.
2. Insist on an international wire transfer in US currency. Once the funds are in your bank account, no one can access them but you.
3. Have your name removed from the car's registration or title. An international buyer needs the title documents for shipping, entry into their own country etc. but that country will never notify the USA / your state that the vehicle has left.
4. Complete and mail in the "Release of liability" section that can be torn off from your title. If you don't have one, visit you DMV in person with a copy of the bill of sale.
