Probably the cheap black plastic odometer gears(2) if you have set in center. If you have odometer on the left and trip odometer on the right then it is two sets...four gears. Usually when one breaks the other is not far behind in the two set type. There are several online suppliers who can provide parts for the repair.
There is a tiny gear in the odometer itself which is plastic and only lasts about ten years or less.
It is not clear from your question whether the odometer is mechanical or digital. If it is digital, this is likely the beginning symptoms of a cracked solder joint on the circuit board that provides power and mileage information to the odometer display. See the discussion of the problem and options for repair at http://www.odometer-repair.com .
More than likely, it sounds like your odometer cable has been disconnected or is failing. A new odometer cable can be picked up at any auto parts seller.
Disconnecting the speed sensor stops the speedo and odometer. The odometer has to be changed by a certified speedo repair shop.
If the speedo works and the odometer doesn't, it neeeds to go to the speedo shop as the problem is inside the spedo. GoodluckJoe
