In front wheel drive vehicle they have an axle running to each tire. the axle has a constant velocity joint which helps it maneuver the angle to the tire. when they wear out they will click and eventually go out as in come apart and leave you on the side of the road.

If your axle is wearing out in a truck it could be the splines are wearing which is rare or the bearing or bearings that hold it in place right inside of the wheel is going out.
