R134a became mandated by 1995, and most manufacturers were making the switch by the 1993 and 1994 model years. There is one way to be certain - the schrader valves on the lines going to and from your AC compressor. Trace the lines from your compressor back... the valves are typically covered with a black cap, although this might have been lost.
If the valves are set up for a quick connect, it's an R134a system. If the valves have threads on the outside, the AC system was an R12 system, and, if you're not the original owner of the vehicle, I'd recommend you have a refrigerant purity test done to see if it is still R12, or it if was converted to R134a - many conversions were done as cheaply as possible, and still retain the R12 schrader valves.
