Most Air Conditioner Coolant is a liquid marketed as freon. It is a Chlorofluorocarbon and boils when poured on to the hand. This cools the hand very quickly as it boils due to a change of state from liquid to gas. Newer versions were made to stop the ozone depletion in the stratosphere but HCFC's are powerful greenhouse gases. Many air conditioners in cars and builidings leak CFC's which is extremely worrying for the future of the planet.
Liquid Nitrogen and Liquid C02are other refrigerants

It probably needs some coolant. This is the chemical that is put in the car in order to keep the air conditioner cool. If your air conditioner is not getting cold either the coolant has run out or leaked out.
the system is probably out of coolant.
Air conditioners manufactured between 1970 and 2010 use Freon as a coolant. Freon is scheduled to be phased out of usage by 2020. Newer air conditioner models use a different type of coolant.
