Ford actually specifies Mercon V ATF, I believe Tremec(who makes the transmissions) suggests Dexron, but there's not much of a difference.. oh and royal purple makes some nice stuff that's dexron equivalent, that should work great too. any of those three should do. just don't use gear oil.

Manual transmissions use a variety of oils: regular motor oil, heavyweight hypoid gear oil or even automatic transmission fluid in some cases. Your owner's manual will tell you what your transmission calls for. If you don't have an owner's manual, either get one or call your local Ford dealer for the proper lubricant. Using the wrong lubricant can cause serious damage to the transmission.
It is towable only if it is a manual transmission in neutral. An automatic transmission is not towable unless the front wheels are put on a dolly or raised off the ground. The reason for this is that the pump that supplies lubricant to the transmission only runs when the engine is running.
Ford specified Mercon for the 1992 manual tranny for sure; so double check the owners manual if available, (it will tell you exactly which lubricant to use).
I have this same transmission and have had the same question, especially since I was never sure if it was the same year as the truck it was in but I found that it is. It is in a 1987 Ranger and was originally installed behind a 2.0L. The haynes book I have says that SAE 80W standard transmission lubricant is what to use.
To check the manual transmission fluid in a 1999 Ford Contour, first ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the engine is off. Locate the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission case. Remove the fill plug using the appropriate tool, and check the fluid level; it should be just below the fill hole. If necessary, add the appropriate type of transmission fluid until it reaches the correct level.
According to the 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Owner Guide ( Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid ) is used in the transfer case ( approximately 1.3 quarts / 1.2 liters )
