Most experts would say that a temperature between 73 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity between 40 and 60% is recommended in the summer. But perhaps to follow that to the letter is too simplistic because some people can get really uncomfortable when it becomes humid and the humidity might be around 60%.

Some air conditioning engineers have gone a step further and instead of referring to percent humidity they refer to something called Wet Bulb temperature and they say that even a 68 degree Wet Bulb temperature is acceptable, which would make the atmosphere in the room even stickier than most people are used to. I tried that and it didn't work for me. I will mention the website where those engineers' (they are called ASHRAE) recommendations are if you want to read them. Their website is http://www.ashrae.org/File%20Library/docLib//Public/2003691613_347.pdf I hope a link works here.

What I have found for myself is that a temperature below 76 degrees is best with the humidity much below 60%, even 58% for example is good, but a humidity above 60% can be uncomfortable.

Another thing is that many room air conditioners have a button or lever that closes or opens the air exhaust. When that air exhaust is closed the air conditioner acts like a dehumidifier and it cuts down the humidity and that is good. But some smaller size air conditioners do not have such an air exhaust button or lever and the air exhaust is always open and it can get quite humid in the room. That is not so good. One thing that someone can do with those small air conditioners is to use the Energy Saver option that they carry sometimes and you may find that there is a lot less humidity in the room that way than if you used more energy. That would be nice.

Is an air conditioner colder at 60 or 70?

An air conditioner does not have a specific temperature setting; rather, it cools the air to a desired temperature set by the user. Therefore, an air conditioner set to 60 degrees will produce colder air than one set to 70 degrees because it will cool the air to a lower temperature.

What is the function of the air conditioner switch and how does it regulate the temperature in a room?

The air conditioner switch controls the operation of the air conditioning unit. It regulates the temperature in a room by turning the unit on or off based on the temperature setting selected by the user. When the room temperature rises above the set point, the switch activates the air conditioner to cool the room. Once the room reaches the desired temperature, the switch turns off the air conditioner to maintain the set temperature.

How does a thermostat control the temperature of an air conditioner?

A thermostat controls the temperature of an air conditioner by sensing the current temperature in a room and comparing it to the desired temperature set by the user. When the room temperature is higher than the desired temperature, the thermostat signals the air conditioner to turn on and cool the room. Once the room reaches the desired temperature, the thermostat signals the air conditioner to turn off.

How long should the air conditioner run after reaching the set temperature?

The air conditioner should run for a few more minutes after reaching the set temperature to ensure that the room stays cool and comfortable.

What temperature is the most environmentally friendly for your air conditioner to be set at in the summer?

Off

Why does an air conditioner must cycle on and off to keep the room cooled to a preset temperature?

Seriously? Cold air blows out of the air conditioner when it's on, reducing the temperature of the room. When the temperature in the room reaches some preset value, the air conditioner shuts off to prevent the temperature from dropping any lower. Once the air conditioner is shut off, heat sources within the room including people, appliances, and heat entering through walls and windows causes the temperature in the room to increase. When this happens the air conditioner kicks on again to bring the temperature back down. It ain't rocket science.

If your air conditioner is set to cool why is it heating?

If your air conditioner is set to cool and it is heating you have a broken thermostat.

Is it safe to set your air conditioner unit to below 70 degrees?

Yes, it does not change any function of the the air conditioning or the temperature at which it disperses air, it just runs longer to get to the temperature you set it at. If it runs longer though it will cost you more.
