An AC compressor is part of an air conditioner which may be used in a car's AC system. The compressor is used to change the pressure between the AC's compartments in order to help condense the refrigerant gas back into a liquid.

Commonly referred to as the heart of the system, the compressor is a belt driven pump that is fastened to the engine. It is responsible for compressing and transferring refrigerant gas. The a/c system is split into two sides, a high pressure side and a low pressure side; defined as discharge and suction. Since the compressor is basically a pump, it must have a intake side and a discharge side. The intake, or suction side, draws in refrigerant gas from the outlet of the evaporator. In some cases it does this via the accumulator.

Check the Freon pressure first. The AC compressor will not turn on if the Freon pressure is too low.

To charge refrigerant gas in a split AC unit, first ensure the system is off and locate the service valves on the outdoor unit. Connect a refrigerant gauge manifold to the low-pressure side, then attach the refrigerant canister to the high-pressure side. Open the service valves and allow refrigerant to flow into the system, monitoring the gauges to maintain the proper pressure levels. Once the desired charge is achieved, close the valves, disconnect the gauges, and run the system to check for proper operation.
