the name say it all. a 4 bbl carb has 4 big holes through it which allow air to flow through it to draw fuel into the engine. a 2 bbl only has 2.
primarily a 4 bbl acts like a 2bbl under normal driving conditions where it only uses the front 2 bbls. when you stomp the gas the second set open up to feed it extra air and fuel.
