The air box is there to insure that the intake air is balanced to all runners, the size is carefully calculated for best effect based on what the engine builder needs for "power Band"
On multi carburetor engines the air box also contains the fuel "Spit Back" that is needed for the tuned carbs to provide the correct mixture. Spit back is a cloud of fuel that is sprayed backwards from the carbs at certain rpm.
And finally the car or motor cycle builder uses it to reduce noise.
If you are going to remove it you may need to change the fuel calibration for the engine.
An airbox is a chamber in a car or motorcycle engine which draws in air and distributes it to the carburetors.
Behind the airbox
There's a hose that runs from the top of the engine/transmission to the airbox. This is the Crankcase vent hose. Pressure in the crankcase caused by blowby is relieved into the airbox to reduce pollution. It's 100% normal for there to by oil in the bottom of the airbox Running the engine for long periods of time above 8,000RPM will increase the amount of oil in the airbox. There's a little drain hose on the bottom of the airbox, just pull the plug and let the oil drain out into the pan everytime you do an oil change.
I believe its located on the airbox. look for picture of it on auto parts websites. I believe it is on the upper-left side of the airbox, on the bottom of the bracket. Im not 100% on this though. To replace the air filter on a BMW R1200RT motorcycle, first, ensure the bike is on a stable surface and the ignition is off. Remove the seat and the side panels to access the airbox. Unscrew the airbox cover, then carefully remove the old air filter and clean any debris from the airbox. Install the new air filter, reassemble the airbox and panels, and finally, replace the seat.
Take off the airbox and the airfilter and the lower airbox, remove rubber strap, remove negative cable then the positive cable and slide the battery out.
It's in the big airbox - lots of dismantling, the whole thing comes out from under the bonnet. Then you dismantle the airbox to get to the matrix - not for the faint-hearted.
first you need to remove air inlet hose from airbox then the rubber hose that is connected to your pcv valve once you have done this you can go ahead and loosen the clamp at the base of the airbox then just pull straight up the entire air box must be removed before you try to open the assembly,if you try to open the airbox before removing from engine you will break the plastic titts in the back of the airbox.
