You have to stop just before you enter the intersection - not 25 feet back, unless, a "limit line" (Solid white line) or crosswalk exists. If either of these two are painted on the road surface make sure you stop behind them before proceeding.

If you stop way back from the intersection (no lines on the road) it doesn't count. Think of it this way, "Can you see the officer to your left or right before you run the stop sign?" If you can't - just pull forward until you can see both ways and you haven't entered the intersection. Stop and then proceed.

Don't think you can fool someone into thinking you stopped "early" because you are a good Samaritan!
