It depends on what you mean by "breaking".
They don't have safety guidelines like a bumper or frame. They can be cracked by something as small as a rock chip or even hail. For a windshield to completely shatter, however, it takes a great deal of impact. I have never seen anybody able to break a front windshield with a bat/brick/foot. It typically takes a pretty severe collision (often times a rollover) to shatter a windshield.
Breaking glass is a physical change because there is NO chemical difference ... from before to after.
Best to call a glass co. to do it as the old glass has to be cut out and everything around the windshield cleaned before the new glass with urethane on it can be set back in place.
Yes. Good luck getting the '02 glass out without breaking it!
Vehicular windshields are made of laminated auto glass. There is a polymer layer between the glass sheets that provides a "flexible strength" to the glass to keep it from breaking into large, sharp pieces. The advantages of this type of glass in a windshield are pretty obvious. Links can be found below to check facts and learn more.
A spider web crack on a windshield is typically caused by a sudden impact or stress on the glass, such as a rock hitting the windshield while driving. This impact creates a small crack that spreads out in a pattern resembling a spider web.
Yes if you know what your doing and are careful, I would have a glass co. do it.
Some great companies offering windshield glass replacement include for example "Safelite", "Glass Doctor", "Windshields To Go" and "Windshield Experts".
Yes, glass can break glass. When enough force is applied, such as through impact or pressure, glass can crack or shatter. Glass is a brittle material that is prone to breaking under stress.
Yes, glass can bend under pressure to a certain extent before breaking.
It is a physical change. The resulting fragments of glass are still glass and of the same composition.
Call an auto glass service. This is not a DIY job. Well I beg to differ! All you need is to go to a windshield dealer, buy the glass, the primer, and the glue. Remove the old windshield, prime the sill, then put a 3/8 bead of glue all the way around the inside of the glass (start and stop points should be at the bottom of the windshield) then set glass in place . shimm the glass up to the right height. Roll windows down before shutting the doors or you will blow the seal out.
You should pay around $100-$250 for windshield glass repair.
