In a 1968 Chrysler 440 engine, the number 1 piston is located at the front of the engine on the driver's side. The cylinders are numbered from front to back, with cylinder 1 being the first cylinder on the left side when facing the engine. This layout is typical for Chrysler's V8 engine design, following a specific numbering sequence.

The oil temperature switch on a Chrysler 440 engine is typically located on the oil filter adapter or near the oil pan. It is often found on the driver's side of the engine block. For exact placement, consulting the specific service manual for the engine model year can provide detailed information.
It will bolt in with exception to the 383 exhaust "Y" pipe. However I remember some of those 383 and 440's had different crankshafts between the standard and the automatics. The crankshaft was machined deeper to accept the standard transmission input shaft. Be sure to check the back of the crankshaft on that 440 and to also install a pilot bushing/bearing.
Its the normal right handed thraed... It IS torqued to about 120 ft lbs though... You may need to wedge the flexplate/flywheel to keep from spinning the entire rotating assembly when you try to loosen it.

A big block Chrysler (Dodge) 440, or even a Hemi would bolt in, with the appropriate engine mounts.
The biggest engine available based on cubic inches was the 440 C.I. However, the engine with the most available horsepower was the 426 Hemi.
