More than likely when you did the last oil change you did not remove the old gasket and ended uw tih two in the filter. The when the engine ran through some cycles and started the extra gasket just let go.
if I understand your ? can not changing an old oil filter gasket casue damage to your engine NO only if it leaked out all the oil other wise no. If the filter change was the cause of the leak and you lost enough oil for the engine to start clattering, yes, it caused the permanent engine damage.
is this a gas or diesel if it is a diesel , on top of engine is a pot with a black top unscrew this blck top remove filter. replace with a new filter and a new "O" ring gasket for top screw top back on start engine it it is a gas engine i cant help you cause i dont know where it is
To change the gasket remove the oil filter. There will be 2 bolts holding the adapter to the block, remove them push the adapter off. Clean both surfaces apply gasket seal to gasket. Put the bolts thru the holes and apply gasket to adapter. Start the bolts into engine block and tighten evenly. Put on a new oil filter making sure the filter rubber gasket has a coating of oil.
It could be the cause of the knock only if the gasket was bad and leaked out almost all the oil.

Sure it will start with a blown head gasket. But, if you continue to run this engine with a blown head gasket you will destroy the engine.
Filter is located on driver side near the back of the engine (Pain in the rear to access). It is a metal type simmilar to an oil filter It has a water separator on the bottom of it. First unplug the wires on the water separator. Twist the filter off, a filter wrench may be nessisary but they are difficult to get on the filter. Make sure gasket came with the filter. Remove the water seperator change its rubber gasket and install on new filter. Make sure new gasket is properly seated on the new filter and fill filter with freash diesel. Carefuly put new filter back on engine, avoid getting debree in filter. Tighten 1/2 turn after gasket touches. Plug in Water seperator wires Use manual primer to top off fule in filter. It is located down and back from bottom of filter on engine block. Push it 30- 40 times Start vehicle.If the truck doesn't start crack the nuts loose on the first three injectors (by exaust manifold). Crank engine until fule sprays out of cracked nuts. Tighten nuts and start truck.
Timing not set up properly
Drain the radiator, remove the head, drain the oil, replace the oil filter. Install the new gasket and replace the head. Add the correct amount of oil and coolant to the engine. Start the engine and bleed all air from the system.
