It depends on what type of vehicle you have, and also what year it is. If it is a 1996 and up, it is OBD 2 (on board diagnostics 2). You can get a generic OBD 2 scanner for as little as $10 off eBay (which will at least display the code) or spend 100's of dollars on something more advanced from Snap-On, Mac, etc. You can also get decent ones from Pep-Boys, Autozone, Advanced Autoparts, etc. It will not tell you exactly what is wrong all the time, but the code will at least help point you in the correct direction of the failure. Also - all you have to do (for most generic scanners) is plug it in to the OBD 2 communication port for the computer. For most vehicles, it's located under the dash below the steering wheel and it's a 16 pin connecter (they all look the same). Again, it all depends on what vehicle you have though.
