the library is a good source you can also contact some of the larger gas producing refinerys such as bp or british petrolium shell chevron some of them have history museums about the eveloution of the gas phonomenom and they my be able to gide you there the might also be collectors on the old pumps and might have some insite as well the pump might have numbers or the company tha made it you search the history of the company relatives or key employees . I would try the library first and ask the librarian they often have search ideas very helpful hope this helps
