The filter is not a traditional filter with a metal canister. It is a cartridge. You can find it next to the dipstick. You can change the filter without going underneath. You will see a round black piece of plastic with a hexagon fitting. This is located on the front of the engine looking while the hood is open. It is a LARGE diameter hex. I used a larger crescent wrench and opened it up all the way. There is sufficient room to loosen the cap. The oil did not run out all over and once removed, wiggle the old filter from the cap and pop in the new filter. There was not a mess! I carefully handthreaded this back and needed to tighten the cap with the wrench until snug. I am sure there is a tool made for this available.
