There are three.
The gauge and Light sender is on the rear cylinder head toward the passenger side. It is easily visible just above the exhaust manual.
The sender for the fan relay is just forward of the water outlet/thermostat housing.

It is screewed into the top of the engine block just behind the distributor.
I believe all were hydraulic.....

depends of course on the nature of the problem(undescribed) but one malfunction could be the sending unit in the fuel tank.

Physically, yes. GM's drivetrain are highly swapable. But there can be lots of differences. I'm assuming you are pulling "x" tranny out of an 84 to put in a 87 that had "x" tranny. Not pulling an "x" tranny out of an 84 to put in an 87 that had a "y" tranny. The devil's in the details. Flywheels might not be the same. Most auto part places have the info and will glad to help.
