The head gasket could be leaking between water jackets and the cylinders. No visible cracks would be seen as they would be internal within the gasketing material. James
That depends entirely on how much you value the car.
You can blow a head gasket or the head can crack or be warped.
Your engine most likely overheated
Also a cracked block or head, the heads on a 2.2L often crack when the head gasket fails in my experience.
Gasket is more likely but head can be magnafluxed to tell for sure. Usually end up with signs of water in oil/exhaust & white smoke when running. Do a compression check. if you are losing pressure it's rings, valve guides or head crack/gasket.
A faulty gasket, overheating of the engine or old age. Or, a combination of any of these causes.
You have either a blown head gasket or a cracked head. To determine if the head is cracked requires taking it off the engine and taking it to a machine shop and having it pressure checked. In an extreme case you could have an internal crack in the block but I would suspect the gasket and start there.
Check your oil... To see if oil is mix with the antifreeze... If it is it may be a bad head gasket or worse, a crack head gasket... you will need to have engine pressure tested... Good luck...
perform a pressure test on the cylinders. if they don't hold pressure it's a blown head gasket
It can be from 4 different sources. Your head gasket, crack in the head, crack in the piston cylinder (block), or the water pump seals. You can pressure test the head to eliminate the head gasket, but the only way to be for sure that is not a crack is to tear it down. On my LTZ400 there is a drain plug which will allow you to determine if there is a fluid exchange between the water pump oil gasket and water gasket. If this drain is dry then it can be only one of the other 3 choices.
Because you have an internal crack, most likely in head or head gasket.
Sounds like head gasket, or head itself has a crack allowing the fluid to leak directly into the piston chamber, simple pressure test of coolant should prove it
