No it is likely you have a water pump problem. Also check the water lever in the radiator, and weather engine oil has been changed recently or not. These engines are also problem prone in the head gasket.
The engine size should not matter when going down a hill, as long as you dont put it in too low of a gear and over rev your engine.
You are running out of fuel. As you are going up the hill, the fuel is sloshing around causing sudden fuel starvation to the engine.

U do that by fixing the EGR Valve OR the Vaccume hose going 2 it.
I had this problem until I had the timing corrected. It is a very cheap and easy thing to do but best to get a proper service centre to do it. If the timing is slightly out the car will backfire and be sluggish when going up hills and acelerating.
Depending how high the temperature is going- maybe normal engine is working harder climbing hills Does it stay in the Normal range on gauge?
