Yes, that is one possible causes. Unless you are loosing coolant with no apparent leak and see white smoke from the exhaust. In that case you have a blown head gasket.
I would have to assume that you need to replace your thermostat. If the temp. gauge isn't getting very hot (around 190 degrees) after the vehicle has been runing for an extended period of time the thermostat is probably stuck open.
A thermostat can be stuck open or closed. If the engine runs to cool it is stuck open. If the engine is running hot it is stuck closed. If you don't have these problems you should'nt have to change it.
yes not good for the engine if it runs too cold either
You may need anew thermostat or the fan has stopped working.
Either a clogged heater core or a thermostat that is stuck shut.
only if the thermostat is stuck open or has been removed
A short time is normal, if it won't stop, your relay is stuck, replace it.
If the engine is taking a long time to warm up or the gauge registers low heat the thermostat probably is stuck open and needs to be replaced. If the engine runs hot check the temperature of the upper radiator hose. If it's not hot the thermostat is stuck closed and should be replaced. If the upper hose is hot it means the thermostat is open and working. Cooling problem could be restricted radiator.
more airflow over the radiator keeps it cool on the highway, in town more sitting in traffic and lower speeds let it run hotter. If it is nearly over heating start with the easy things check the radiator fluid. if it is full then it is probably the thermostat sticking either open or closed. since it runs cooler on the highway I would think it is stuck open allowing the water to circulate through the radiator.
"If you are looking for a used Jeep that runs real good and is in good condition it will be around 3000.00. But if you are looking for a new Jeep, the cheapest would be around 20,000."
I have a 1987 jeep comanache 4.0 that runs hot . I have put in a new 160 degree thermostat , a new eater pump and a radiator and a water sending unit. but it still runs hot . Can any tell me wants wrong? Thanks Rick jrhar36@aol.com
Hi, I had the same issues, I would gather to say it is the thermostat.
