Usually, that is the gas cap not being tightened properly and a sensor in the tank thinks that the tank has an air leak.
loosen and re-insert the cap, make sure it's tight.
If you have access to a scan tool/ code reader use it to check and clear the present codes.
if not, you can disconnect the battery ground cable(the black one) for a minute or so. this will also reset the vehicles computer. CAUTION: Disconnecting your battery may have adverse effects with on board security systems or alarms. check your owners manual under "replacing the battery"
There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
My oil light just came on in my 2004 Dodge Durango. I am taking it to the shop today, but from the link below: http://www.carcomplaints.com/Dodge/Durango/2004/engine/engine_failure_due_to_oil_sludge.shtml I'm worried. Sounds like it could be a "sludge problem"...
I know that this might sound stupid, but I also have a 2004 Dodge Neon SXT and the last time my check engine light came on, I noticed that my tires were a little low, and the light went off after they were filled. Hope this helps!
you need to have it checked for codes
Resetting an engine light on a 1996 Dodge Caravan SE is very easy to do. The battery can be disconnected for up to one minute to make the check engine light go off.
If you fix the reason the light came on in the first place the check engine light will reset itself after a few drive cycles.

The gas cap was loose on my '04 Sienna. How's that for simple...
I HAVE A 2004 MITSUBISHI ENDEAVOR, AND THE ONLY TIME MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IS WHEN I FAILED TO CLOSE MY GAS CAP TIGHTLY. THE LONGEST THE LIGHT STAYED ON WAS FOR 3 DAYS AND THEN IT WENT OFF.
why the engine light of my subaru came on after i washed the engine
My guess would be that motor is locked.
You need to find out what the check engine light came on for. Have the computer scanned for codes. When certain errors occur that could damage the engine, sometimes the computer will just shut down the engine to prevent damage. That may be what happened to you.
