not an uncommon problem on these vehicles, the answer you need to find is how much oil is your engine burning.

Opel/vauxhall do actually state in handbooks that 1 litre of oil burned per 1000 miles is acceptable usuage

(ie 20 litres of oil between services!)

Why water should not be used to put off fire caused by petrol?

It actually is used, but only to cool the burning structures. If you add water to a large oil or gas fire, it would carry the burning fuel around, since the fuel is lighter and will float on the water.
