Most likely the button is broken, or has become disconnected (Vibration can sometimes loosen a connector) Solution? Check (or have someone else check) that there are no loose wires anywhere. Failing that buy a new button. If that doesnt do the trick it is more likely that the problem is mechanical. It may lie with the 4WD differential, in which case, for the age of the vehicle it may not be worth fixing. Ask your local mechanic for his opinion before you go spending inordinate amounts of money... you might be wasting it!
