They can be, when not ridden properly. Make sure to read the manual that comes with your quad and adhere to these rules:

  • Protect your skull by wearing a DOT-compliant helmet.
  • Protect your eyes and skin from branches and flying debris with goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves.
  • Never ride on paved roads - except to cross, and only when done safely and where permitted by law - another vehicle could hit you. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway and can be difficult to control on paved roads.
  • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Never carry or be a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and carry no more than one passenger on an ATV designed for two people.
  • Ride an ATV that's right for your age - children under 16 are twice as likely to be injured riding an adult ATV instead of a youth's.
  • Supervise riders younger than 16 - ATVs are not toys.
  • Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.
  • Consider taking a training course if you are new to ATV riding.
