That does not work.
The paper clip trick was a OBD I GM thing. For your 97 Ford you need a code reader for OBD II.
On some cars all you need to read OBD 1 codes is a paper clip. You can but OBD 1 tools at some part stores and online at places like Ebay.
you cannot jump the computer terminals on a vehicle with the OBD2 computer unlike the original OBD. you must check codes with a computer tester. very cheap at autozone--bought mine for $25.00.
To perform a paper clip test on a Vauxhall Vectra, you need to locate the OBD II diagnostic port, typically found under the dashboard near the steering column. Straighten a paper clip and insert one end into the "A" terminal and the other end into the "B" terminal of the port. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position without starting the engine; the check engine light will begin to flash, indicating any trouble codes stored in the vehicle's computer. Count the flashes to decode the specific fault codes, allowing you to identify potential issues.
Get the code, you can do it with a paper clip because its an OBD-I , just count the flashes the light makes to find out what code is stored. where does paper clip go count flashes were
With an OBD II reader. Instructions come with the reader. Codes are standard.
use an OBD-I code reader.
You need an OBD I scanner.
To check codes in an OBD-I system, a scanner specifically designed for OBD-I vehicles is required, as standard OBD-II scanners are not compatible. Many users opt for a basic OBD-I code reader or a multimeter to check the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) through the vehicle's diagnostic connector. Some popular OBD-I scanners include the Actron CP9015 or the OTC 4000 series. Always refer to the vehicle's service manual for specific diagnostic procedures and connector locations.
With an obd 2 scan tool
it is ALDL, or some call it OBD1. It is easier to pull trouble codes off of using a paper clip rather than using a scanner. There is alot of info on the web if you google ALDL
