The belt tensioner has a 3/8" square hole near the end of the arm by the idler pulley. Insert the square of either a 3/8" ratchet or breaker bar and simply pull up against the spring. Then using your other hand remove the belt.
To change the alternator belt an a 1985 Chevy Celebrity: 1. Loosen the adjuster bolt and the mounting bolt. 2. Move the alternator to release the belt tension and remove the belt. Reverse to reinstall a new belt.

To change the alternator on a 1987 to 1990 Chevy Celebrity V6: First disconnect the ground cable from the battery. Use a 3/8" breaker bar or ratchet in the square on the end of the belt tensioner to release the tension and take the serpentine belt off of the alternator drive pulley. There should be a routing chart on the belt guard between the water pump and the power steering pump. Remove the three bolts that attach the alternator to the mounting bracket. Pull the alternator up and disconnect the plug and use a wrench to disconnect the battery wire. Reverse the process to install the new alternator.

To change the alternator in your 1986 Chevrolet Celebrity: 1, Remove the battery ground cable. 2. Unplug remove the wiring from the alternator. 3. Loosen the bolts that hold the alternator in place. Remove the drive belt. 4. Remove the bolts and the alternator will pull out. Reverse the process to reinstall the new alternator.

The tension bar is the supporting bar that you can loosen to slide the alternator down and remove the belt. Tension on the belt should be 1/4-1/2 inch when pushed on the longest straight run. (Between pulleys)
