You probably have your AC on. This draws more current from the alternator. You can have a loose alternator belt, or a bad alternator. Try it with AC off. (if this is what you're doing)..Tom
Is it a stick shift?
Since it is starting from 0, the engine idle is low.
When an engine is in "idle" it is taking over by itself without any acceleration (or load) being applied. This the "idle RPM" would be the number of revolutions it makes per minute while running at "idle".
mass air flow
no, you should let it idle and warm up a little bit.
Stalling at idle? Immediately after starting? While driving? While stopping? Cold or hot engine? What engine do you have?
Adjust the idle screw. Get a Haynes manual or search for an underbonnet diagram. While the car is running, slowly turn the idle screw [with a screwdriver] until it's at the RPM you want.
A faulty camshaft can cause your 1991 Nissan Maxima to idle erratically. A diagnostic test could verify the cause of the improper idling speed.
carb problems, adjust the idle screw and see if that helps
To adjust the idle on a 2-barrel Rochester carburetor, first ensure the engine is warm and idling. Locate the idle mixture screws on either side of the carburetor; turning them clockwise enriches the mixture, while counterclockwise leans it out. Adjust each screw slowly, listening for the smoothest idle and optimal RPM. Finally, set the idle speed using the throttle stop screw to achieve the desired idle RPM.
maybe the clutch
Dawdle is to waste time, idle, loiter, to move slowly, or saunter.
