US coins were never made of pure silver, it's too soft. They had at least 10% copper in them so they wouldn't wear out right away. Please see the Related Question for more.

As of this time (10:43pm EDT) silver is $17.34 per oz. All US Morgan & Peace Dollars have the same composition of .900 silver/.100 copper with a net weight of .77344oz of silver they are not pure silver. Which gives them a value of $13.41 each for the bullion. The Mint does produce Silver Eagle one dollar bullion coins that are considered pure silver.

at first, you have to find the density of the penny. [density = mass/ volume ] so 2.49/ 0.349 = 7.1347. rounded to 7.1 but the density of the copper is 8.92 g/ cm3 as the densities are not close, the penny is not pure copper. hope this help :)
