Just one, as long as it is 42 cents (10/2008). Or if you have some older US stamps, you could put 84 1/2 cent stamps on it. Or any combination of other stamps to pretty much create any number between 1 and 84 as long as they total 42 cents.
Postage depends on which country you live in, how much the envelope and contents weigh, and where you are sending the envelope to. You'll need to include all that in your question to get the correct answer - or you could just go to your local postal website and get the answer from the experts...
