Oils on human skin and hair keep them from drying out, but the oils can also attract and hold dirt. The oily dirt is a nonpolar mixture. So washing with water alone wont clean any of the dirt away. So that's where soap comes in! Soaps are salts of fatty acids, which are hydrogen molecules with carboxylic acids at one end...------ Soap has a ionic end that will dissolve in water a longg hydrocarbon portion that WILL dissolve in oily dirt. The dirt is removed from your skin and hair or fabric, suspended in the wash water and washed away:)

To clean off dirt better and to smell better. When you lather up soap on your body it picks up dirt and dead skin, breaks down oils and cleanses sweat from the body. Water alone can't do this.

Clean water is very important. If we waste clean water, we are going to use dirty water for the next few centuries. Imagine yourself washing your hands with muddy, filthy water... YUCK!

Hands Clean was created on 2002-01-08.
To demonstrate the recommended method for hand washing, first wet your hands with clean, running water and apply soap. Rub your hands together to create a lather, ensuring you scrub all surfaces, including the back of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails, for at least 20 seconds. Rinse your hands thoroughly under clean running water to remove all soap and dirt. Finally, dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them.
