Yes, however it's not the piercing it's self that causes the throat infection but actually the jewellery in the piercing that can cause the infection. Tongue barbells need to be removed and cleaned, even more so with internally threaded barbells** (**these are barbells where the ball has a threaded post in it and it threads into the shaft ) these barbells have a hollow void in the center and can draw in body fluid and bacteria and allow it to grow inside the barbell shaft. This bacterial growth will cause repeated infections until the jewellery is removed and cleaned or removed and replaced with new jewellery. Please keep this in mind, all jewellery needs to be removed from piercings and given a really good cleaning every couple of months over an above the normal cleaning you give it when bathing.

When you go to book your appointment have the piercer look at your tongue before hand to tell you if there is enough free room for a tongue piercing. If you are told there is not enough room, then take that as fact and find something else to get done. Be aware that there are some less than reputable piercers who will attempt to pierce a tongue that just doesn't have the safe room for a piercing. This can cause damage to the gums and teeth more than a standard tongue piercing would cause.

No you do not in fact, the proper placement is at least that far back from the tip, depending on a person's tongue length. The placement varies and of course depends on the person, sometimes they wish it to be as far back as you can pierce it safely to allow for more piercings in front of them. Your piercer should've been careful to avoid the veins that are visable underneath for proper placement and a piercing that will heal well and correctly. If your piercing site is infected, still bleeding, painful or still severely swollen after the general 3 to 4 days after the initial piercing or your tongue is turning gray or black then yes, you should remove your piercing if you can, immediately, & seek medical attention.

No actually there are no pain receptors in the center of the tongue, they are all along the outside edge of the tongue to remind you not to bite your tongue. We are just piercing the center connective tissue between the two muscle complexes that make up the tongue so it quick simple and for the most part painless. The discomfort comes the 2nd and 3rd days post piercing when the swelling can be a bit painful and annoying. If you follow the instructions provided to you by your professional body piercer you should do just fine.

Who knows, it's just another internet imagined piercing that doesn't really exist. Lots of piercings are given names that already have proper names in the industry. It's more than likely a piercing gun piercing where you pray it doesn't get infected.
