Depending on where on your body the tattoo is being applied, it can range from mildly irritating all the way up to "being scratched by a cat".

The type of needle and ink, and whether you're doing outline or shading, are also factors.

Generally, areas where the bone is near to the surface or other obviously sensitive places -the ribs, collar bone, etc- are very painful to have directly tattooed. Areas with more muscle padding don't hurt as much, but if there's a lot of fat in the area it can be difficult to get a clear picture.
