This is best done by a professional at a salon. Your hair is very sensitive to color and when you dye it attaches on quickly, but the only down fall is permanent does not forever. The dyes themselves have a leech out process that lightens over time. Most are three months some you could get six out of depending on the intensity of the chemical. Please beware that the chemicals you put in your hair when you dye weaken the hair, cause it to dry out and become brittle. Dont know if your a man or woman but they make some great wigs these days and you could have a salt and pepper world if you choose but the best is a salon and dont be surprised if they cant get you to total white because light hair can be darkened but dark hair can usually only go another couple a shades lighter because of the natural pigment that already exists.
