If the colour is darker than your natural hair colour, first the artificial colour will have to be removed, using a colour remover (similar to bleach).
Because permanent haircolour always removes some of the hairs natural pigment re-colouring will be required to achieve a natural looking colour (otherwise the hair will be left a red, orange or yellow colour).
Replacing the missing colour can sometimes required a process called pre-colouring to replace the missing pigment in the hair.
