How do you get certified to do tattoos?

Depends on what your state/local gov't require. Some states are regulated (meaning they have standards you must satisfy to become licensed or certified) while other states are not regulated and no license may be required.

Some places exist where artists needed to be vaccinated against Hep B and in other places that does not matter. In some places, no one with a criminal history could earn a tattoo artist license while elsewhere that was irrelevant to professional licensure.

I'm currently becoming a tattoo apprentice. First you have to go to a tattoo shop that you find clean and comfortable, also knowing some of the artists helps greatly too. Go in with your portfolio, and show them your work. They will give you feedback, if they like your work enough they will usually ask you for a resume.Come back with your resume and some tattoo designs, something they can work with. If all goes well you should start off as a counter person, which means you will answering the phone, cleaning, etc for no cost, which is pretty much apprenticing, you will be doing the same things while learning as well. Remember, you will not gain hourly wage. It is really hard to get into the tattooing industry, so they might shoot you down, if so, keep coming in and bugging them with your resume and portfolio, this will show initiative, after a while they should accept you.
