A good way to spike your hair up without any gel is with wax, pomade or clay.
These products do not require much and have a fantastic hold. Pomade causes your hair to look slick like a gel is being used whereas wax or clay do not, however, clay is sometimes too heavy for some peoples hair.
What you do is you take the product (just a small scoop with your index finger), rub it into your palms and then run your fingers back and forth trhough your hair. Once your hair starts reacting an holding, it is then time to change your hair to how u want it.
Normally, it is a good idea to make sure these products dont touch the roots, however, if you want a permanent style, you should apply it to your roots after the above method and then after 1-2 weeks of applying it, your hair should hold that position. Also, make sure you dry your hair after a bath or shower in the style you want so the hold is guarenteed. In the morning your hair may be a mess but you can just wash it and dry it in the right syle and it will hold. The product will have to be applied again if you wish to maintian the style when you notice your hair droop but that depends on your own hair especially its thickness and length. Hairspray is good for keeping your hair up afterwards if you do not want to apply it to the roots or keep the style constantly.
