A hypodermic needle is used when one needs to administer liquids to a person quickly, or when taking the liquid orally would not be appropriate or helpful. The structure of the hypodermic needle is also quite useful in research when an area needs to remain sterile.

Plastic syringes are typically manufactured by a process called injection molding. The machines used are called injection molding machines. These machines inject liquified plastic into a mold which is the shape of a syringe. When the plastic cools, it forms a syringe.
Syringes are uncommon in teaching labs, but are widely used in some research labs. The primary use of syringes is delivering liquid reagents to the reaction mixture under inert atmosphere. The reaction vessel is closed with a septum and pressurized, perhaps with nitrogen. Since the reagents cannot simply be poured, syringes are used to deliver the reagents to the vessel, without compromising the seal on the septum. It is also more convenient to measure small volumes with a syringe than with a graduated cylinder, and thus syringes may also be used for measuring volumes of liquid reagents.
Naomi Hunter gives Snake the syringe in Act 2 during the cutscene at the South American Research Lab. The syringe will then appear in your inventory under Recovery Items automatically afterwards.

ssk = slip slip knit That means you slip the next two stitches, individually, knit-wise (insert right needle under stitch and remove) back to the right needle. Then insert the left needle underneath the slipped stitches, wrap yarn around the back of the right needle, then pull the yarn through the slipped stitches from the back, take worked stitches off left needle.
There is a bracket you can remove on the top of the machine, under the cover. The bracket is used for blind stitching. Once the bracket is removed, just set your machine to blind stitch which will center the sewing needle. The needle will no longer move from center as long as you removed the right bracket. Two screws hold it in.
