Any time you want if you have decided you don't want it, keep in mind that the tissue will take a couple of days to close and several weeks to heal but the actual cartilage is permanently pierced and will not heal.

Generally you should wait 2 weeks before changing the jewellery, unless it was done by a professional body piercer then you are best to leave it alone till it's healed (6~8 weeks). If it's a piercing gun piercing then change it after 2 weeks, piercing guns are not to be used to pierce anything other than earlobes, regardless of what the studio told you ( they have your money now and could care less about you or your piercing ). Piercing studs are not designed to be used in ear cartilage, so a captive bead ring is a good option for healing and cleaning.

The healing time for cartilage piercing is 6 to 8 weeks, removing the jewellery sooner than that can lead to secondary infection and damage to the fine tissue that the body is trying to form.
