Once the swelling goes down go to your piercer and they can give you a shorter bar. If you mean to take out the jewelry and leave it naked, there isn't a way to tell when/how long you can do that.

There is no "lock on a tongue ring" and it's not a ring it's a barbell.
If you have a tongue ring, it makes it hard to make out. the ring always gets in the way.
