I had my dermal for 2 1/2 years. I always took care of it and it kept getting red. Finally after the first year it calmed down. Then about 15 months goes by and it swells. I get it taken care of and then 6 weeks after that I woke up and it was sticking out. When I went to place it back in, it simply fell out. They don't always last forever.

Dermal anchors what exactly are they and can you take them out and change them yourself and how likely are they to reject also can someone tell me how long they take to heal?

Dermal anchors are not considered body piercing but actually body modification, they are inserted under the skin in one hole. They are subject to infection and rejection and can only be removed by a licensed Doctor, the installation of dermal anchors is illegal in some US states. Jewellery changing needs to be done by your body piercer, specialized tools are needed to hold the anchor while the jeweled top is changed. Healing times can vary form person to person. This is something that needs to be done by a qualified professional body piercer who has received training in the use of dermal anchors. Be aware there are morons out there that claim they know what they are doing and will install these in locations that a subject to rejection, snagging and tearing. So do your research and seek out a truly experienced professional who really knows what they are doing.

Where is the backing on a chest piercing?

Let me help you out, there are two methods to this piercing. The first is a simple surface barbell piercing that travels under the skin layer between the skin and muscle layer. The second is a process called dermal anchoring where the jewellery ( a dermal anchor ) is placed in a hole created into the skin layer down to the muscle layer, the jewellery has a metal "foot" that "anchors" the jewellery into the skin. With dermal anchors the problems arise from infection, rejection and snagging of the jewellery which results in nasty scarring and in some cases heavy short term bleeding depending on the placement location. I need to tell you that this is not kid stuff, this is serious body modification and will not be done on anyone who is not an "*adult" (* being the age of majority and considered an adult by your federal government). Dermal anchoring must be done by an experienced professional body piercer who has received training in the procedure not some clown with a few done on you tube. Dermal anchoring is illegal in some US states so check with your local health inspection office to see if it's legal in your area. Because it's more body modification than body piercing and the dermal anchor can't be removed like normal piercing jewellery can, it's removal must be done by a licensed doctor. Yes body piercers can not remove dermal anchors without being a licensed doctor in many places and countries (practicing medicine without a license). Surface piercings are just that they have and entry and exit point and are not as nasty to deal with as dermal anchors can be from a piercing stand point. They are less apt to be snagged and can be changed with the aid of a professional body piercer and can be removed without the legal hassles or dermal anchors. From an infection stand point surface piercings are easier to treat and clean over the dermals but be sure you find and experienced professional body piercer to do the piercing for you. Again this still isn't something you want to try at home, serious life long injuries can result from poor placement and lack of knowledge.

Can you get a dermal anchor anywhere?

NoHere's the problem with dermal anchors, some less experienced piercers are throwing dermal anchors in were ever the clients wants them, this is not only irresponsible it's also dangerous. An experienced professional piercer will work with the body and the locations that show minimal body movement through a range of motion. These locations that will be less apt to be subjected to snagging and tearing. You also need to know that what you see on the web is quite often not reality, but photo opportunities that never really last due to snagging, tearing and rejection. Be sure you are dealing with someone who can provide the dermals *legally in your area and has the professionalism and knowledge to do it right. (*Dermal anchoring is illegal in some US states).Case in point: I have had over ten ladies come in over the last 8 months with rejected and torn dermal anchors done by *"brand X" ( *I am being polite here by not naming the shop directly ). All the dermals have been placed in areas that were clearly subject to outside irritation, snagging and tearing. This is a clear case of a inexperienced uncaring money hungry person making a mess out of people just to get money, there is no post piercing support for the client and it's a "well tough for you" attitude. Truly unprofessional behaviour toward the clients and the craft.Dermal anchors are not piercings but body modifications that will eventually need to be removed by a licensed Doctor, professional body piercers can not legally remove these once they are healed. If you ever need to go for a CAT scan or MRI procedure all jewellery must be removed "this includes the dermal anchors". So weight this information in your mind before you run off getting something done, discuss your ideas with your professional body piercer. There are surface piercing options that will easily offer the same effect as a dermal without the hassles that surround dermal anchors. A true professional will discuss the options with you and work in concert with your ideas to make them a reality that will last. It's needs to make sense to you, now and down the road, if it doesn't then maybe it's a bad idea.

Dermal piercings don't last long anyways but if you get pregnant, they'll surely reject. You're skin will stretch and that kind of stress will push the piercings out.
