How old do you need to be in a tattoo school?

to get a tattoo license the health department needs to inspect the area(s) that you will be tattooing at, and confirm that it is a sterile environment. they also check your sanitation process to make sure that everything is being cleaned correctly.

18 years of age and over, BUT…DO NOT attend a tattoo school! If you do, you are black balling your entire career and you will have less respect from artists than a "scratcher" does. These schools claim that they can teach you in 1 - 2 weeks what it takes all of us who went about it the RIGHT way 1 - 2 YEARS to learn! They do not show you proper sterilization techniques, they rush you through the learning curve thereby ensuring that you won't understand half of what they are "teaching" to you, they don't really take the time to instruct you on bloodborne pathogens, they don't take the time to make sure that you are truly an artist or know how to draw base level things, they let you go loose on the poor saps coming to these "schools" for free tattoos when you DO NOT know what you are doing, etc., etc., etc. You can't even learn all that you would need to be a well rounded artist in 1 - 2 weeks let alone having the MONTHS of time that it takes to perfect your application. This is the biggest point of problem for most of us (aside from the fact that you're essentially trying to cheat by going to a "school" that will pump you out quickly) application is something that simply cannot be taught so quickly. The majority of being an apprentice is trial and error and you learn from your mistakes. The big payoff to going to these schools is a generic "Diploma" that they'll print out for you, which will get you laughed out of any reputable shop, and the sense that you "accomplished" something when in fact you just got swindled out of your cash and made to look like an idiot for ever having gone to a tattoo school to begin with.
