Over direction is when you direct sections of hair further over the head rather than straight out from the head. For instance if you have a side parting, instead of pulling the sections straight up I would direct the hair over to the other side of the head to meet the layers on that side. I was taught this method whilst hairdressing in a modern salon in Portsmouth but can't seem to get anyone else to understand it. If you have more hair on one side of the head because you have a side parting it stands to reason if you studied symmetry at school that the side with more hair will fall shorter if cut straight up when layering so you have to account for the fact that the hair must reach the same length as the other side. So all sections are taken right over to match in with the other side and when the hair falls it is the same length each side. Honest this method works well with long layers and keeps volume. it also works with short hair when you want the fringe to be longer.

Why hair growth patterns be considered before doing a cutting service?

Hair growth patterns are crucial to consider before a cutting service because they influence how the hair falls and frames the face. Understanding the natural growth direction can help the stylist create a more flattering cut that complements the client's features. Additionally, knowing whether the hair tends to grow thicker in certain areas can aid in achieving balance and shape in the overall look. This awareness ensures that the haircut not only looks good immediately but also grows out well over time.

Why do hair test cutting carry out?

A test is cutting a bit of hair off that you wouldn't notice on the hair and putting it on a bit of foil and put the colour that you would choose for it on the foil. Then after that leave it for full developing time. It's very important to do this because if your client wants to dye their hair a different colour but you want to make sure it doesn't go a different colour you feel that you should do a strand test as well then do it before you give the client a colour service.
