While there are many variations in spelling, I was unable to find a meaning associated with this proud and distinguished name. However, the family motto, as found borne upon thier family crest, translates as Reason and Power. First found in County Limerick, O'Connell was a chief of Hy-Cuilean, near the borders of the Counties of Cork and Kerry.
