The bobby pin was invented to hold the hair out of the face of the newly short hair of the early 1920's. Before this era, women's hair was arranged in a variety of ways utilizing the hair pin. The hair pin is a u-shaped device which is good for anchoring long hair, but did not address the short hair of the new "bobs" of the 1920's. Thus the name for the new device. It was a cheap easy way to anchor the new short hair away from the face without the use of more expensive devices such as barrettes, combs, or hair nets. In England, the device is known as the Kirby grip. In typical American fashion, the "bob pin" became known as the bobby pin. It comes in various colors to match hair colors, ranging from reddish brown and black to silver white.
