The parrying dagger is a category of small hand-held weapons from the European late Middle Ages and early Renaissance. These weapons were used as off-hand weapons in conjunction with a single handed sword. As the name implies they were designed to parry, or defend, more effectively than a simple dagger form, typically incorporating a wider guard, and often some other defensive features to better protect the hand, as well. The main-gauche (french for "left hand") is used mainly to assist in parrying incoming thrusts, while the dominant hand wields a
rapier or similar longer weapon intended for one-handed use. It may also be used for attack if an opportunity arises.

Yup. I'm proud of my parrying skills :)
It was invented in the 14th century for armoured soldiers to be able to push enemy pikes out of the way, then they would draw something smaller like a dagger or mace, though many do have parrying lugs for one on one combat as well and would have been a feared weapon to armoured foe and unarmoured alike, it was a natural evolution from the claymore.

I bought a dagger.
I belive a dirk was used primarily agains plate armor, since it was a straight bladed dagger, it was fairly effective in getting between the plates in armor, and was often used by pikemen. To pikemen it is considered the true killer, as the pike was capable of putting a heavily armored opponent to the ground if it failed to kill outright. A parrying dagger, is as it says used to parry a sword stroke, for a good one, you could look up a sword breaker, which is really effective.
