The difference would have to be that besides there obvious purpose difference that mechanically, a curling iron has a rounded rod to spin for curls where a straightener has 2 heated flat pads that steam hair flat.

You should really look into buying a Sedu flat iron. I personally think it's better. I've used Chi flat irons before and just left my hair rather dry, and my Sedu actually makes my hair shiny and just all around it's a good straightener.
