skin
The visible part of the nail is called the nail plate or nail body. It is the hard, protective outer covering of the nail.
The middle part of the finger nail is called the nail plate. This is the section that is below the white part and above the lunula and cuticle.
The nail body, also known as the nail plate, covers and protects the nail bed, which is the layer of skin beneath the nail. The nail body is made up of layers of a protein called keratin and plays a role in protecting the tips of the fingers and toes.
The whitish semilunar area at the proximal end of the nail body is called the lunula. It is typically more visible on the thumbnail and represents the visible part of the nail matrix beneath the nail plate. The lunula is usually a pale color due to the thickened nail plate above it.
Cuticle
The nail plate is made up of a tough protein called keratin, which provides strength and protection to the nail. It also contains water, oils, and minerals that help maintain the nail's flexibility and hardness. Additionally, the nail plate is composed of overlapping layers that are continually produced by the nail matrix at the base of the nail.
The only living part of the nail is the Matrix which is situated just below the cuticle.
The nail plate is produced by living skin cells ( specialized epithelial cells)
The nail part refers to the the visible part of nails on fingers and toes while the nail bed refers to the skin beneath the nail plate.
Nail Plate: The hard surface of the nail that you can see. Nail Bed: All of the soft tissue beneath the nail. Lanula: The half moon at the base of the nail. While some are hidden, they are usually visible on the thumb. Did you know that it is thought that the lanula is actually a reflection of light. Matrix: This area is located beneath the cuticle. This is where all the growth of the nail takes place. The area contains nerves and blood vessels to nourish the new nail. Cuticle: The skin that overlaps the nail plate is called the cuticle. Allowing the skin to dry out is the reason for the development of hangnails. Nail Folds: The skin that surrounds and supports the nail on three sides, holding it in place. Nail fungus infections often occur in this area.
