90% of nail technicians are from Viet Nam, they do this to make money because they have little academic education, also some trouble with the English language, they are extremely patient and professional when they are doing clients nails and pedicures , this is not something that most Caucasian want to do as a career.

Why do Asians work at nail salon?

Many Vietnamese women were former teachers, business owners and government officials who came to the United States in 1975 after the fall of Saigon and landed in Hope Village, a tent city for Vietnamese refugees near Sacramento. Actress Tippi Hedren, drawn to the plight of Vietnamese refugees, visited every few days. The Vietnamese knew little of Hollywood, so Hedren showed them Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" and pointed out her face on the screen. Hedren was captivated by the refugees' stories of their homeland. They were fascinated by her nails: long, oval, the color of coral. "I noticed that these women were very good with their hands," said Hedren, now 78. "I thought, why couldn't they learn how to do nails?" So Hedren flew in her manicurist once a week to teach the women how to trim cuticles, remove calluses and perform nail wraps. She persuaded a nearby beauty school to teach the women and helped them find jobs. The story and Vietnamese in the nail industry grow from there... cool

Another option is to work out of the comfort of your own home, or to become a mobile nail technician, traveling to clients homes instead. Do a nail salon pay employee by comission or wages?

depending on where u work commission can be around 45% n up average about 60% some salons do both commission & salary if they make over salary u give them commission if they make under its just the set salary. salon owners would not give a nail employee this salary amount if they didn't think they could reach it majority of the weeks...give or take some slow weeks out of the year. but salary is usually close to the commission split. all nail employees also get to keep all their tips. in training or some salons will pay hourly. which can range in an average of $8-$10 an hour.
